About Gastritis

Gastritis is an inflammation, irritation, or erosion of the stomach lining. It can be either acute, coming on suddenly for a short duration, or chronic, developing gradually and lasting for a long time. It's a common condition; in the U.S., about 8 out of every 1,000 people are affected. Acute gastritis is often caused by an infection, excessive alcohol consumption, or certain medications that irritate the stomach. Globally, up to half of the population is believed to have chronic gastritis linked to the Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria.

Beyond its acute or chronic nature, gastritis can be classified based on how it impacts the stomach’s protective lining. Erosive gastritis is a type where the inflammation leads to injuries or ulcers on the stomach lining. In contrast, nonerosive gastritis involves irritation without the formation of ulcers. A specific type of nonerosive gastritis, called atrophic gastritis, causes the stomach lining to thin over time due to persistent irritation.
