About Stomach Ulcers
Stomach ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers, are painful open sores that develop on the inner lining of your stomach or the top of your small intestine. They form when the protective layer of mucus is eroded, allowing stomach acid to essentially eat away at the digestive tract lining.
There are three main types of peptic ulcers. A gastric ulcer is a sore that forms in the stomach lining itself, while a duodenal ulcer appears in the upper part of the small intestine. Less common is an esophageal ulcer, which develops in the tube connecting your throat to your stomach. This type is often caused by certain medications, like some antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, or alcohol abuse.
About 1 in 10 Americans will experience the burning, gnawing abdominal pain of a peptic ulcer at some point in their lives, with duodenal ulcers being more common than stomach ulcers.
