About Gastroparesis
Gastroparesis is a chronic digestive disorder that essentially paralyzes the stomach, preventing it from properly emptying its contents into the small intestine. This slow or absent movement is often due to damage to the vagus nerve, which is responsible for controlling the stomach muscles. Individuals with this condition often experience uncomfortable symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, and feeling full after eating only a small amount of food. While diabetes is the most common cause, gastroparesis can also be triggered by neurological disorders, certain medications, or even surgery. Although there is currently no cure, treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improving a person's ability to get proper nutrition. This is typically achieved through dietary changes, medication, and addressing any underlying medical conditions.
